Best Workplaces in Ohio: Q&A

Q&A with DY USA, a Cleveland-based accountancy firm.

By the Editors

Ohio is as full of successful and diverse workplaces, as it is brimming with vibrant, unique communities. For our tenth annual Best Workplaces in Ohio, Ohio Business Magazine sat down with numerous of our Best Workplaces winners. Here is our conversation with DY USA, a Cleveland-based accounting firm.

Ohio Business Magazine (OBM): How does the company engage with employees?

DY USA (DY): Trust, shared values, mutual respect, reciprocity, resilience and drive to achieve a common purpose – this purposeful culture of social capital DY USA has created allows its team to successfully build strong connections to support one another, get work done efficiently, exceed expectations and enjoy relationships with their clients and each other. These traits motivate DY USA’s international team of 22 professionals to be engaged, loyal, productive and driven to succeed, knowing they are working towards a common goal that benefits everyone.

DY USA’s Five Core Values serve as the foundation of the firm’s culture and guide its business operations and how it builds relationships: trust and transparency; Keep it simple in a complex world; Keep it human, keep it personal; Embrace a healthy work life; and be better than yesterday.

OBM: What is the benefit structure like for employees?

DY: DY USA is committed to providing a wide range of benefits, flexibility and rewards to holistically support its team members’ professional development, personal well-being and job satisfaction. The firm consistently emphasizes the importance of work-life integration, offers flexible work schedules, supports team-building activities, demonstrates ongoing commitment to the community and displays generosity and gratitude to its employees for their loyal support and contributions to the firm’s success.

OBM: How has the company’s employee-relations policy affected company operations and impacted the local community?

DY: DY USA is committed to maintaining a work environment rooted in its Five Core Values and integrating them into how the firm operates and how relationships are nurtured. While the firm’s Management Team makes key business decisions, Whittall includes the entire team in the quarterly strategic update meetings, annual strategic planning process, weekly production numbers, monthly financials and allocation of charitable donation dollars. Whittall also shares progress on firm goals and solicits input on business initiatives and team-building activities.

DY USA’s business model is based on the strong collaboration of team members across two continents, which further supports the firm’s solid track record of embracing, accepting and appreciating diversity. The firm’s success continues to grow based, in part, on the principle of bringing highly skilled professionals together who are open-minded and willing to learn from different perspectives, cultures and backgrounds. Diversity of team members – including those for whom accounting is a second career – has created opportunities to share valuable insights and non-traditional accounting skillsets with both colleagues and clients.
